Not quite sure what I was expecting, really

I just got back from the Crowne Plaza where I joined a few others from the office (Robs and Melanie amongst others) for a Thanksgiving celebration. That hotel is seriously 5 star — just check out the reception desk: +------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | .. image:: http://www.jmcpdotcom.com/blog/wp-content/Thanksgiving_CrownePlaza_reception1.jpg

but even the espresso was CNY28 (=~ AUD4.70) which with the 15% service charge they add to everything works out to approx AUD5.40 …. just a tad expensive in my book.At any rate, dinner was a very nice buffet but when I sat down to eat it with knife and fork it just felt wrong. So I cut up the turkey and then ate with chopsticks. .. image:: http://www.jmcpdotcom.com/blog/wp-content/Thanksgiving_chopsticks.jpg

Another first for this trip

This is a trip of first — first time clambering over one of the Wonders of the World, first time in China, first time travelling with a good camera and having some clue about how to use it …. but I think the ‘first’ which is really going to set this trip apart is that I’m joining a group of the local American expat community (all Sun) tonight for a Thanksgiving dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Yanyuncun. It’s not something I’m used to (same goes for Halloween) except as an observer from the outside (“why hasn’t X replied to my email yet? Oh … Thanksgiving”), so this is going to be fun.

I’m glad I got a good coat

I walked back from the office this evening, leaving about 5pm. It was cold. Damned cold. So cold in fact that by the time I got to the intersection of Beisihuan Xilu and Zhongguancun Dajie, I couldn’t feel my chin.I took a few photos of the traffic. This is the intersection that we’ve been avoiding crossing in the evenings, because it’s …. uh …. somewhat scary with all the cards, trucks, buses, various types of bicycles, and the number of people. It’s easier on the head to walk 200m south and cross near the new subway constructions site. .. image:: http://www.jmcpdotcom.com/blog/wp-content/22nov_traffic1.jpg

note to self: a very handy url to remember

When you’re overseas and want to use a Telstra Telecard, you need to call a local number to get hooked into Telstra’a network. You find those numbers here:http://www.telstra.com.au/callingcardshop/tc_access_numbers.htmI just found out that I have to use the first number (China Netcom Group) from my mobile phone or from the SCERI office, and I use the second one (China Telecom) from the hotel. Good to know .. image:: /images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

The daily commute via shank’s pony

Robs and I have been quite happily walking to and from the office, as much for the exercise as for the experience. Both of us figure that if you’re going to see foreign countries from the back of a taxi, then you’re not really seeing them. This morning it was very foggy (at least by Sydney standards), and the Sinosteel building loomed large: .. image:: http://www.jmcpdotcom.com/blog/wp-content/20nov_sino_steel_bldg1.jpg

Then we popped out onto Haidian Nanlu, made a detour into the Zhongguancun E-Plaza so Rob could buy a lens cap, had some dinner in our local restaurant (expensive tonight, CNY64 for 3 dishes + 2 beers), and then got back to the hotel.`Technorati`_ tags: topic:{Technorati}[China], topic:{Technorati}[Beijing], topic:{Technorati}[Chinese Academy of Sciences], topic:{Technorati}[Zhongguancun]

Vale, Louise Gorman

When I started at Sun back in 1999, the first person I met was a lady by the name of Louise Gorman, who was part of the team at reception. Louise, along with Rebecca and Jane, made me feel very welcome, always remembered my name, and made sure that there was a friendly voice answering the national head office phone number.Sadly, Louise has been battling cancer for the last two or so years, and this morning she succumbed.I cannot make it to her remembrance later this week, but I will always remember her.

Seems like the answer is “buy a mac”!

I read Scott Granneman’s Op-Ed in El Reg in my lunchbreak today. He makes some very interesting points about the EULA for Microsoft Windows Vista. The thought that keeps going through my head is “Buy a Mac instead” — which given my incipient launch into real digital photos…. I might just do!Technorati tags: topic:{Technorati}[EULA], topic:{Technorati}[Windows Vista], topic:{Technorati}[The Register], topic:{Technorati}[The Register], topic:{Technorati}[SecurityFocus]

rdesktop in 24 bit glory

I’ve been trying to figure out for ages how to get my Windows XP remote desktop sessions to operate in 24 bit mode, and today I finally bothered to use a search engine to find out. It’s quite easy when you follow the instructions here. After making that change and disconnecting, my new session is there in 24 bit glory. Now I can play with Picasa and see real colours.

Unexpected side effects

This evening I finally got my internal DNS to work correctly, with forward and reverse lookups showing what I expected (ie, resolving properly). Then I went to check the referrer count on my blog, and got a 503 Resource temporarily unavailable. What the….. ?I checked that I could access tomcat and thus roller via (hostname):8000/roller and friends, bounced apache… and I could see www.jmcp.homeunix.com but the /blog link was still a 503.First thing to do is gather evidence. Over to the error_log file, where I saw this:

[Sun Oct 29 00:26:32 2006] [error] (146)Connection refused: proxy: AJP: attempt to connect to 59.167.244.18:8009 (www.jmcp.homeunix.com) failed
[Sun Oct 29 00:26:32 2006] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (www.jmcp.homeunix.com)
[Sun Oct 29 00:26:32 2006] [error] proxy: AJP: failed to make connection to backend: www.jmcp.homeunix.com
[Sun Oct 29 00:26:40 2006] [error] proxy: AJP: disabled connection for (www.jmcp.homeunix.com)
[Sun Oct 29 00:27:33 2006] [error] (146)Connection refused: proxy: AJP: attempt to connect to [IP address]:8009 (www.jmcp.homeunix.com) failed
[Sun Oct 29 00:27:33 2006] [error] ap_proxy_connect_backend disabling worker for (www.jmcp.homeunix.com)
[Sun Oct 29 00:27:33 2006] [error] proxy: AJP: failed to make connection to backend: www.jmcp.homeunix.com
[Sun Oct 29 00:27:59 2006] [error] proxy: AJP: disabled connection for (www.jmcp.homeunix.com)

In my /etc/apache223/httpd.conf file I had

ProxyPass /roller ajp://www.jmcp.homeunix.com:8009/roller
ProxyPassReverse /roller ajp://www.jmcp.homeunix.com:8009/roller
ProxyPass /blog ajp://www.jmcp.homeunix.com:8009/roller/page/jmcp
ProxyPassReverse /blog ajp://www.jmcp.homeunix.com:8009/roller/page/jmcp

And of course a lookup on www.jmcp.homeunix.com won’t show the CNAME that I setup to point to my webserver/tomcat zone, it’ll show my ISP-assigned static IP address.Doh!I quickly removed the .jmcp.homeunix.com from those lines and bounced the apache223 service and all appears well. The final step was to gather a second opinion on the matter. For that I ssh’d to another system which I have access to and then ran

$ telnet www.jmcp.homeunix.com 80
...
GET /blog HTTP/1.0

and was promptly rewarded with the text which makes up the current entries in my blog. The point to make here is that if you put in a workaround for a problem which is then resolved, you definitely need to re-check your system(s) to ensure that that workaround is still applicable. If it’s not then you need to change it, or even remove it.
